9 Day Taiga Tsaatan Adventure

(1 Review)

Tour Overview:

Experience the extraordinary world of the Tsaatan Reindeer Herders from the very start of your 9-day adventure through Northern Mongolia. The Tsaatan, an ancient and unique ethnic group, have preserved their traditional lifestyle as expert reindeer herders for centuries, living in harmony with nature in the remote and mystical Taiga region. Their deep connection to the land and their reindeer is evident in every aspect of daily life, offering a rare glimpse into a culture that has remained virtually unchanged since the Ice Age. The Tsaatan’s isolated existence, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and untouched wilderness, creates an atmosphere that is both profound and captivating, making them a true highlight of the Mongolian north.

Embark on a remarkable journey through Northern Mongolia, where you will have the opportunity to visit some of the country’s most authentic and untouched sites. This region is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of wildlife, offering an array of natural wonders and cultural experiences. One of the highlights of this journey is Lake Khuvsgul, a pristine body of water that holds an impressive 65 percent of all the fresh water in Mongolia. The lake’s vastness and clarity make it a top spot for boating, canoeing, and fishing. Surrounding the lake, the rugged mountains and dense forests are ideal for spotting wildlife, with over sixty species calling this remote landscape home.

Highlights:

  • Stay with a Darkhad family – Live in a traditional ger deep within the remote Darkhad Valley, experiencing nomadic life in one of Mongolia’s most isolated wilderness regions
  • Meet the Reindeer Herding people, renowned for their close connection with nature and unique herding practices. Learn about their traditions, beliefs, and the challenges they face in the Taiga.
  • Reindeer riding – Take part in reindeer riding, offering a rare and intimate insight into the deep bond between the herders and their animals.
  • Taiga horse trek – Set out on a horse trek through the remote Taiga, exploring northern Mongolia’s wild landscapes and taking in spectacular, untouched scenery.
  • Khuvsgul Lake – Visit the ‘Blue Pearl’ of Mongolia, famed for its crystal clear waters and dramatic mountain scenery, with time to relax or enjoy outdoor activities along its shores
  • Uushigiin Uvur – Visit this ancient site, famous for its Bronze Age deer stones carved with symbolic animal motifs.

Accommodation:

Once you are in the countryside exploring Mongolia it is our preference to stay with local nomadic family run ger camps. Gers will be shared by 4-5 travellers when we stay with a local family ger camps (only your group of travellers). As a Mongolian company we prefer to support these families financially, and help support their livelihood. We are sure this resonates with our travelers who enjoy engaging with their culture and way of life on the steppe. As well as directly supporting local herders, you can experience this rich traditional way of life first hand.

Another unique experience is staying with the Tsaatan reindeer herders, where you’ll sleep in a traditional teepee (known locally as an ortz). These teepees are made from wooden poles and canvas, offering a glimpse into the daily life and customs of the Tsaatan people in the remote Taiga. It’s a rare opportunity to learn firsthand about their close relationship with nature and their centuries-old reindeer herding traditions. While the accommodation is simple, it provides an authentic and immersive experience, allowing you to connect with the Tsaatan community and their way of life.

Please consider that travelling in the countryside of Mongolia can be quite remote. There are often no paved roads so driving can be bumpy and can take a little longer than you might be used to. Also, given the remoteness, western style comforts may not be available.

Western style and luxury options are available in some parts of Mongolia in the form of Tourist ger camps/resorts. Ger camps have comfortable beds, hot showers and western style amenities. These are not included in the price quoted in this itinerary. However, if you think that you would prefer to have access to these western style comforts then please let us know and we can adjust the quote for your itinerary.

Itinerary:

Day 1. Ulaanbaatar to Khuvsgul Province (Duration: 1.5 hours) 100km

We will organize a driver to pick you up from your accommodation in Ulaanbaatar and transfer you to the airport for your domestic flight. The flight departs at 09:00 am and arrives in Murun at 10:10 am, where you will be met by our guide and driver. The guide will then take you to a local place for a meal.

We will drive to visit the Deer Stones, a Bronze Age site created between 1,000 and 3,000 years ago along the Ider River, featuring over thirty deer-decorated stones and carved rocks. We will then continue to Darkhad Valley, where you will stay overnight in a family-run ger camp.

Day 2 - Darkhad Family (120km)

After breakfast, we will begin driving towards the taiga, where you will stay with a Darkhad ethnic nomadic family. The Darkhad are one of Mongolia’s nomadic ethnic groups and live primarily in the Darkhad Valley. They speak a regional variant of the Mongolian language known as the Darkhad dialect, and most Darkhad people practise Shamanism.

After meeting the family, they will introduce you to their horses, which you will use for the trek to West Taiga the following day. Experience nomadic life firsthand by helping herd livestock and enjoying a traditional local dish.

Day 3. West Taiga Horse Trek (30 km)

Today’s journey takes you deep into the West Taiga on horseback, covering approximately 30 kilometres through pristine wilderness. As you ride, you will witness the rich Taiga flora and fauna, passing through dense forests, open valleys, and remote mountain landscapes. This region is home to the Tsaatan (Dukha) people, one of the world’s last reindeer‑herding communities. For thousands of years, the Tsaatan have lived in close harmony with their reindeer, practising ancient shamanistic traditions and maintaining a nomadic lifestyle in one of Central Asia’s most remote environments.

Originally from further west, the Tsaatan migrated to northern Mongolia in 1944, fleeing what is now the Republic of Tuva. Today, reindeer populations are declining, and it is estimated that only around 40 families continue to live according to this traditional way of life, making this encounter both rare and deeply meaningful. This evening, you will stay with a Tsaatan family in their traditional teepee (tipi), offering a unique opportunity to experience their daily life firsthand and to support the continuation of their cultural heritage in the Taiga

Day 4–5: Tsaatan Tribe – Reindeer Herders

Spend two days in the West Taiga, living alongside the Tsaatan reindeer herders. Ride reindeer through the forest, help care for the herds. With no light pollution, nights offer spectacular stargazing, before sleeping in a Tsaatan teepee deep in the wilderness.

Day 6 - Horse Trekking (30km)

After an early morning breakfast, set out on a 30 km horse trek through the remote Taiga landscape. Ride across forest trails, open valleys, and river crossings, surrounded by untouched wilderness and abundant flora and fauna. Along the way, enjoy the changing scenery and the deep sense of isolation that defines this region. In the afternoon, return to the family camp to hand back the horses and relax. Overnight stay in a family ger camp.

Day 7 - Khuvsgul Lake (280km)

Travel through breathtaking scenery en route to Lake Khuvsgul, known as the Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia, set among dramatic mountain landscapes. The journey itself is an adventure, with long stretches of dirt road and mountain passes, and road conditions can be challenging at times, especially after rain.

Lake Khuvsgul is fed by 96 rivers and streams, including the Ugiin River, which flows into the Selenge River and onward to Lake Baikal. Measuring 136 km long, 36 km wide, and 262 metres deep, the lake lies at an altitude of 1,645 metres above sea level. It is also an important migration route for Siberian birdlife, offering excellent bird‑watching opportunities. Overnight stay at a family guesthouse shower facilities available.

Day 8 - Khuvsgul Lake

Take time to relax and fully appreciate the beautiful surroundings of Lake Khuvsgul. Breakfast can be arranged flexibly, allowing you to enjoy a slow and peaceful morning. During the day, a 1,5‑hour boat ride on the lake can be arranged. After boating, enjoy a hike into the surrounding mountains for panoramic views over the lake, or simply remain by the lakeshore to unwind. This is your final day in northern Mongolia, with an overnight stay at a family‑run guesthouse, where shower facilities are available.

Day 9 - Flight to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast at 8:00 am, enjoy your final scenic drive to Murun Airport. Your domestic flight departs at 12:40 pm, taking you back to Ulaanbaatar, arriving at 2:10 pm. On arrival, a driver will be waiting to transfer you to your accommodation.

Magical Reindeer on the 9 Day Taiga Tsaatan Adventure
My fiance and I did the 9 Day Taiga Tsaatan Adventure tour with Meg adventures. This experience was one of the best we’ve ever done, and I’m so grateful we did this.

Before we booked our tour, Meg (the company owner) met with us and clearly and thoroughly described different tour options for us, even building a custom tour route, and helped us pick the right tour for us. When meeting with Meg, it felt like we were spending time with a long-time friend, she just made us feel comfortable and at ease.

Our tour guide Bujin (goes by Bunny) was awesome, our driver Jagga always made us smile, our horseman Chongor taught us Mongolian card games and showed us all the customs of the countryside :), the reindeer were unlike anything we had ever seen before, and being on boat on the lake was such a beautiful day.

Seeing the reindeer and the nomadic families who herd them was truly the highlight of the trip. We watched the families milk them, we watched the reindeer trot the open forest lands to eat, and watched the reindeer sleep.

Our tour guide Bujin (goes by Bunny) was the one of the best guides we’ve ever had. She always was positive. She knew the answer to every question we had, and continued to teach us little cultural traditions along the way. She was a wonderful chef and accommodated for dietary restrictions we had. We booked two other tours in Mongolia with other companies, and did not have even remotely close to the same experience. I don’t know how we were so lucky to have such a wonderful experience with Bunny! She truly made this trip a one-of-a-kind experience for us.

I would definitely recommend Meg’s tours to a friend, and I hope one day we can return to Mongolia and reconnect with these lovely friends we made along the way.

For anyone reading this regardless whether you book with Meg or not, we had really positive experiences trying to learn a few words of the local language and doing our absolutely best to speak with and spend time with the countryside folks of Mongolia. They are gentle, kind, and funny, and just are inspirations for hardwork.
